E-Petition e-7458 

E-Petition e-7203 has officially closed with 17,531 validated signatures from Canadians across the country. A new E-Petition e-7458 — also sponsored by Scott Reid, and also opposing the ALTO high-speed rail project as it is currently presented — has been created to replace it. You can sign e-7458, even if you previously signed e-7203. Once you have signed, you'll receive an email asking you to confirm your signature, which you must do for it to be counted. 

Paper-Based Petition

Sponsored by MP Scott Reid, this petition opposes the ALTO high-speed rail project. It is availalbe at Lucky Dollar, McCormick's, Fast Freddy's and A1. It is different than the e-petitions, so be sure to sign this one too!

Weekly ALTO Challenges

The consultation period may be closed, but there are still opportunities to share feedback and stay engaged in the process. Each week we’ll share a simple action anyone can take—no matter where you live along the potential routes.​

Week 22: With the Montreal-Ottawa route expected to be revealed this fall, the time to make your voice heard is now! That's why we’re releasing this weekly challenge on Monday instead of Wednesday to help ensure there's a strong final push to get as many signatures as we can on E-Petition e-7458 — sponsored by Scott Reid, and opposing the ALTO high-speed rail project as it is currently presented — before it closes this Friday, September 25th at 1:52 pm (EDT).

 

What you can do:

  1. Sign the e-petition, if you haven’t already.

  2. Send the link to 10 people you know who you don’t think have signed it yet. Remember to think about people outside the corridors! In your communication with them explain why this matters so much. Need some ideas? Check out our 4, 2 and 1 page Debunking ALTO documents available on the Resources tab. 

 

Note: People can sign e-7458, even if they previously signed e-7203. The signer will receive an email asking them to confirm their signature, which they must do for it to be counted.

Car parking is located at a neighbouring farm @ 600 Domain Rd, East Hawkesury, ON. Shuttle buses will be available to bring you from the parking area to the rally site. Tractors can park on-site at the rally.

 

What you can do:

  1. Make today the day you commit to attending and determine your travel plans.

  2. Register for the event here. 

  3. Reach out to at least three friends, family members, neighbours, or coworkers you can invite to attend. A direct invitation is one of the most effective ways to grow our numbers.

 

We need everyone there. Strong and united.

Week 20: This week let’s contact federal MPs and Ontario MPPs whose portfolios include rural areas.

 

To make things easier, you can write one email and adapt it for different recipients with minor changes based on their role. For example, if you are writing to the Ontario MPP, you might add a sentence such as:

"While the ALTO initiative is federally led, it will have direct and significant impacts on rural areas in Ontario. I believe your role will be important in ensuring that Ontario's interests are effectively represented and that any major infrastructure project delivers the greatest public benefit while minimizing harm.”

Week 17: This week let’s focus on continuing to raise awareness of the ALTO HSR project.

 

Consider who in your life have you not discussed ALTO with yet. Maybe an old friend, co-worker, or family member? Maybe someone who lives outside the potential path of the train or even in another province?

 

Take a few moments to reach out to one or more of these people and share what is happening and how it affects you.

 

Encourage them to sign the e-Petition e-7458 opposing the ALTO high-speed rail project as it is currently presented and spread the word to others who may not have heard.

Want a resource you can send to help them better understand the issues? On the Resource page of this website you’ll find a copy of the United Against ALTO flyer, as well as 3 versions (4 pages, 2 pages, and 1 pages) of our Debunking ALTO document, based largely on the work of the Citizens Research Initiative.

Week 16: This week let's contact our municipal councils about ALTO’s requests for municipalities to enter into Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs), Confidentiality and Information Sharing Agreements (CISAs), or similar confidentiality arrangements.

​

If your municipality has already said no to an ALTO NDA/CISA and/or refused access to municipally owned land, thank your Mayor and Council for taking that position, and encourage them to share their experience and encourage other municipalities to do the same.

​

If your municipality has not yet taken a position, ask your Mayor and Council to refuse any request from ALTO to enter into an NDA/CISA and to carefully consider whether ALTO should have access to municipally owned land for project-related activities.

​

For Stone Mills residents, Council has taken a clear position by rejecting an NDA/CISA with ALTO and refusing access to Township-owned lands for ALTO-related activities unless authorized by Council or required by law. Our sample email thanks Council for both aspects of its decision and asks Council to encourage other municipalities to take a similar stand.

Week 14: Given the recently published articles saying that Ontario is wavering in its support for ALTO and the statement issued by 11 Eastern Ontario MPPs about the questions left unanswered and voices ignored by ALTO, this week's letter-writing challenge is to contact Doug Ford and Ontario MPPs to express support and share your concerns about ALTO.

Week 11: This week let’s provide input on the proposed changes to Canada’s Major Project Review Process.

​

Until July 22, the federal government is seeking public feedback on proposed changes to how major projects are reviewed and approved in Canada. The proposals cover a wide range of projects, including transportation infrastructure, rail, highways, ports, airports, transmission lines, pipelines, mines, nuclear facilities, and economic corridors. Among the proposed changes are:

• federal decisions within one year

• more streamlined approvals and permitting

• a single federal decision document for some projects

• creation of Federal Economic Zones

• changes to environmental permitting and regulatory processes.

 

While ALTO is not currently a designated a Major Project under the Building Canada Act, as per the ALTO corporate plan, this is the goal.

Week 10: This week, let’s take a moment to thank the advocates and groups who have worked hard to investigate, raise awareness, or challenge the ALTO HSR project. You might choose to target a supportive politician, a local community member, or one of the many organizations that lent its voice to our cause. Depending on who you contact, you may opt for a DM, a phone call, an email, or a formal letter. Week 8: With last week being the Peaceful Protest Against ALTO on Parliament Hill and this weekend being the start of summer, we thought everyone could use a “catch up” weekly challenge. This is your invitation to take some time to review articles or videos on ALTO that have been on your list, but you haven’t got a chance to get to yet. Need a suggestion? You could review great articles by Lindsay Davidson on https://citizenresearch.ca/ or our own Save Stone Mills Debunking ALTO job aid or ALTO Coverage June 2026 (both found in the Resources tab).

 

Week 7:  Today is the day! Meet us on Parliament Hill for the Peaceful Protest Against ALTO. This is our chance to Fill the Hill and show them that we ARE the noise!

 

A large crowd sends a powerful message. It demonstrates to fellow Canadians, the media, and government decision-makers that opposition to ALTO is real, growing, and impossible to ignore. With the House sitting today, there is no better time to stand together and show the strength of our movement.

 

If you can’t attend in person but would still like to show your support, leave a comment on the Facebook Save Stone Mills page under the Week 7 post, sharing a brief message of support for the rally and/or explaining why you oppose ALTO. (If you're not on Facebook, you can send an email to info.savestonemills@gmail.com.) On Friday, we'll compile these messages and include them in a letter to Minister MacKinnon, adding your voice to the concerns being raised on Parliament Hill today. Please remember to keep your comments respectful and civil.

Week 3: Email the new Parliamentary Budget Officer, Annette Ryan. The Parliamentary Budget Officer is an independent, non-partisan role responsible for providing MPs with economic and financial analysis, scrutinizing government spending and increasing budget transparency. Week 2: Email all Ontario MPPs to express they have an important role to play in ensuring our province’s interests are effectively represented in the ALTO high-speed rail project—especially given the Canada–Ontario Partnership to Build and its commitment to collaborative planning for the ALTO high-speed rail initiative. This is also a good chance to raise awareness of all the voices in Eastern Ontario speaking out against the ALTO project.
