About Us 

Stone Mills Against ALTO (formerly Save Stone Mills) emerged in response to concerns raised by local residents, including:

​

• A lack of clear, accessible information about what the Crown corporation ALTO is proposing in the area through the High Speed Rail project.

• Uncertainty about how — or whether — public feedback gathered through the consultation process will meaningfully influence decisions.

• Potential property impacts, including the possible expropriation of homes, land, and private property, as well as damage to existing residences and agricultural lands.

• Environmental and infrastructure impacts, including effects on ecologically sensitive areas; access challenges for residents and emergency services where roads may be cut off or permanently rerouted; and impacts on water systems — including wells and water tables — even for residents who do not live directly along the proposed route.

• Questions about the urgency of the project and the costs associated with it.

 

Taken together, these concerns point to a broader issue: there is significant local opposition to the ALTO project as it relates to the proposed Southern Corridor, the Northern Corridor, and other areas included in the project’s current 1,000-km study region.

​Opposition to the ALTO high-speed rail proposal is also emerging more broadly, with more Canadians questioning the urgency, cost, and impacts of this "nation-building" project.

Our commitment is to provide research-based information, encourage respectful and informed discussion, support our community, and ensure the opinions of Stone Mills residents continue to be heard throughout the ALTO process.
